She live with her family on a planet settled by independent and proudly traditional Terrans from the Americas of Earth. She grew up with Chakotay, learning their people's traditions from their father. She and her brother were taken by Klingon foot soldiers when the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance took over their homeworld.
