The 2004 Brickyard 400 was a Nextel Cup (now Sprint Cup) event held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 8, 2004. Jeff Gordon dominated the race, leading 124 of 161 laps. However, when debris knocked out Gordon's closest competitor Matt Kenseth, it also hit Gordon's car. Gordon, though, had enough left in the car to hold off Dale Jarrett in the series' first green-white-checkered. It was Gordon's final win of the year and Gordon closed to within 97 points of championship leader Jimmie Johnson (36th).
