The Mediatised Houses are the noble families of Germany which lost their immediacy during the Mediatisation which began in 1806. "Mediatisation" is the process of an immediate state annexing the territory of another immediate state, though leaving the annexed with several rights and privileges. The mediatisation began in Germany when Napoleon Bonaparte of France defeated the Holy Roman Empire in wars past, leading to the dissolution of the Empire in 1806. Napoleon replaced it with the Confederation of the Rhine with the incentive that any state which joined could annex the territory of states which did not.

  • The Mediatised Houses are the noble families of Germany which lost their immediacy during the Mediatisation which began in 1806. Those states which were mediatised are recognised, with exceptions (see below), as the mediatised houses. When Napoleon Bonaparte was finally defeated in 1814, the Congress of Vienna did not recreate the Empire or the mediatised states, but instead granted them several rights. In 1825 the Mediatised Princes (with the dignity "Durchlaucht" meaning "Most Serene Highness") were finalised by the German diet. In 1829 the Mediatised Counts (with the dignity "Erlaucht" meaning "Most Illustrious Highness") were also finalised. Almost all the mediatised houses were Counts, New Princes, or houses which resided outside of Germany. Some states were also raised to Princely rank after mediatisation, and are therefore listed as "Durchlaucht".
