He played junior hockey for the Fort William Canadiens (1962 to 1965) and the Montreal Junior Canadiens (1965 to 1968). Turning pro in 1968, Stewart spent two seasons in the Montreal Canadiens' minor pro system before being chosen by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1970 NHL Expansion Draft. He only played three games for the Canucks in 1970-71 and was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in 1972 for Jim Niekamp. In the NHL Stewart played in 251 games and scored 57 goals and 73 assists.
