Pedro II (2 December 1825 – 5 December 1891), nicknamed "the Magnanimous" was the second and last Emperor of Brazil. His reign saw the abolition of slavery in the Empire. Despite initial success as Emperor, Pedro began losing interest in politics and ruling effectively. After a reign of 58 years, he was deposed in 1889, and died of pneumonia in France two years later.
