The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Hartwig von Ludwiger was responsible for numerous atrocities committed throughout the Balkans. After the war, he was executed by the Yugoslavs as a war criminal.
