| - The Man was a torturer who most likely worked for Starfleet, though a more secretive and dangerous part of it. (Star Trek: Mirror Wars) For over a month, he tortured Blake Terval, but because Blake never gave any information away, Blake was intended to be killed. The Man convinced his "leaders" to give him more time to get information out of Blake. A little while later, a use for Blake arose, so it was hinted that The Man took him to the mirror universe. Later, it was revealed that Blake was taken to a ship and blindfolded. After about a day, The Man released Blake and told him to go down the hall, saying that he was going to release Blake, but that Blake had a job to do first.

- "The Man" does not usually refer to a specific individual, but instead to the government, leaders of large corporations, and other authority figures in general, such as the police. The Man is colloquially defined as the figurative person who controls our world.
- The Man is real and controls our world, which is why many people choose to fight him. Yet he cannot be beaten, because once the current "Man" is dead, another will rise to power. The Man cannot be defeated. The Man is watching you. Always. The Man may or may not be the leader of Them.

- The Man (if that is his real name) is the archenemy of hippies. According to the hippies, he is a repressive Freedom Hater who enjoys keeping people "down" and not paying workers enough money. "Far out, man!" The man is a proverbial guy who hates it when people stick 'it' to him. According to liberals, he represents all that is wrong in America. The man is typically white, liberal, and rich enough to be politically dangerous without being a billionaire, which is why they hate him. In homage to "The Man", American youth occasionally call each other "the man" as a term of admiration.
- You've heard of him. He controls everything. Emperors, ancient conspiracies, gods, student councils.... All answer to him. Sometimes he means to keep people down For the Evulz, and put squirrels in every birdfeeder. In short, he is the definitive Magnificent Bastard. The Man is much less specific than The Syndicate or the Ancient Conspiracy. It's a personification of establishment itself, even if no one person or organization makes up that establishment. Expect Chaotic Good characters to stand and stick it to him. Nowadays, it's largely a Discredited Trope, with very few straight uses.
- Natoma (60, 208) It all started back in the Alpha stage of Second Life (then Linden World) when Linden Lab wanted to test a new rendering engine, how feasible a city scape would be, and other general content testing. This city was built in Natoma before any non-employee users had logged into SL and was not named but often referred to as "Linden Town" or "Linden City". The town/city contained many buildings (mostly unfurnished and low texture usage), a small park-like town square with a fountain, and roads all through it. The city also had a statue in its town square behind a "City Hall". The statue turned out of course to be "The Man" built by a content developer (oldjohn Linden) hired at the time by LL (in 2002).
- Two summers prior to that, I stayed in a house in New Hampshire for a week. It was a very nice house, but the only downfall was that it was pretty close to the train tracks. Every single night, the mirror to my dresser would vibrate against the wall and make a terrible buzzing sound. One night as the train was going by, it seemed to have been moving past my house for an extremely long time. I got up out of my bed to look out the window to see what was taking so long. The shades we had were solid material, rather than blinds with individual strips. Credited to Skella
