  • Chungking (modern spelling: Chongqing) is a large inland city in central China. Located near where the Jialing River joins the Yangtze River, it is one of China's major inland port cities. During World War II, it served as Chiang Kai-Shek's provisional capital, and was bombed heavily by the Japanese. In 1935, an airplane belonging to Lao Che Air Freight stopped in Chungking to refuel on its way from Shanghai. The plane, carrying a load of live poultry, and three last minute passengers, Indiana Jones, Short Round, and Willie Scott, was supposed to fly to Bangkok, but instead was flown west from Chungking toward the border with India, eventually crashing near the Pindari Glacier.
