Chungking (modern spelling: Chongqing) is a large inland city in central China. Located near where the Jialing River joins the Yangtze River, it is one of China's major inland port cities. During World War II, it served as Chiang Kai-Shek's provisional capital, and was bombed heavily by the Japanese.
