In 2372, Neelix asked Ensign Hogan to recover data from subspace communications logs that appeared to be suffering from missing entries because of data fragmentation. Upon looking at the file, Hogan quickly noticed something strange going on, so he ran a signal modulation analysis. Via the analysis, he found out the messages had been sent without the use of any of the ship's antenna arrays, but rather sneakily sent through the power grid, encoded in the waste energy of the propulsion systems. He further turned up signal correlation traces, though these turned out to be false. (VOY: "Investigations")
