  • The 1986 Talladega 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Talladega Superspeedway on July 27, 1986. The 17th race of the 1986 season, it became the most competitive of the season and set a new record for leaders in a 500-mile race. Bill Elliott won the pole with Dale Earnhardt second and Tim Richmond third. Starting in 13th was Bobby Hillin, Jr, driving a Stavola Brothers Racing Buick as teammate to Bobby Allison. The lead changed hands 49 official times among 26 drivers, the first time in racing history a race had seen over half the starting field lead at least one lap. In the first 51 laps Terry Labonte and Richard Petty were among the leaders; during Petty's stay at the front he raced nose to nose for three straight laps with Earnhardt when the yellow flew for Labonte blowing a tire that ravaged the underside of his racecar. Petty fell out a few laps later when his engine erupted and he spun into the trioval infield. Sterling Marlin, driving for Hoss Ellington, stormed past Richmond and led the opening lap and was in the thick of the race for its entirety. Also battling for the lead was Davey Allison, subbing for Neil Bonnett because of a shoulder injury to Bonnett the previous week at the Summer 500 at Pocono Raceway. Points leader Dale Earnhardt led 54 laps before his engine failed and he finished 26th. His points lead fell to 161 points on Darrell Waltrip. Stats Waltrip lost a lap near midway and was eliminated in a massive crash on Lap 160; Hillin Jr. tagged race leader Harry Gant and the wreck eliminated Waltrip (who finished 25th), Cale Yarborough, Geoff Bodine, and Gant. With thirteen laps to go a mad scramble erupted; Hillin Jr. took the lead with nine laps to go and on the final lap Marlin got into Bobby Allison and another massive crash erupted; Tim Richmond rallied past Marlin for second but neither could catch Hillin Jr. Hillin was mistakenly listed in media accounts as the youngest winner in NASCAR history; it was his only Winston Cup win.
