  • Lieutenant Ujiki is the former commander of the Tokyo Sword Bearing Police and a former samurai from Satsuma who fought for the Ishin Shishi during the Meiji Revolution. When Satsuma's samurai were absorbed into the Japanese police force, Ujiki was granted a high rank among Tokyo's officers for his service and, in 1878, when Hiruma Gohei went on a murderous rampage in the city under the guise of Hitokiri Battōsai, the lieutenant was placed at the head of a new corps of Tokyo policemen with the authority to wear sabers and use them if necessary. However, Ujiki and his men abused their power and lorded their swords over the civilians as if their defunct samurai status were still in effect, even after Hiruma Gohei had been arrested. When the regular police pursue and corner Himura Kenshin for wearing a sword, Ujiki leads the Sword Corps into the situation unnecessarily and takes command, attempting to goad Kenshin into a sword fight so as to show off his abilities. When threatening Kamiya Kaoru and the crowd of bystanders finally convinces Kenshin to draw, Ujiki displays his own sword style - Jigen-ryū - but is clearly outmatched and struck down with one blow from Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū Ryūkansen. He is subsequently dismissed, the sword bearing police are disbanded and he is presumably arrested.
