Photovoltaic Power Production is increasing nowadays. Forecast information is essential for an efficient use, the management of the electricity grid and for solar energy trading. Solar Photovoltaic systems transform solar energy into electric power. The power output depends on the incoming radiation and on the solar panel characteristics. To achieve an accurate forecast we need to have a deep knowledge of the Sun´s path, the atmosphere´s condition and the scattering processes. We also have to take into account the characteristics of the solar plant.

To achieve an accurate forecast we need to have a deep knowledge of the Sun´s path, the atmosphere´s condition and the scattering processes. We also have to take into account the characteristics of the solar plant. Solar radiation reaches the Earth´s atmosphere. When the radiation travels through the atmosphere, it is scattered by atoms, dust and water drops. The part remaining is the direct radiation and it reaches the solar panels. The amount of direct radiation that finally reaches the panels depends on many factors, as the angle between the incoming radiation and the surface of the panel and the airmass and particles that the radiation find on its way. We have also to consider that some part of the scattered radiation will reach the panel indirectly, like the one reflected by clouds. This part is called diffuse radiation. Direct, diffuse and reflected direction can be forecasted.
