An away team is a team of people usually from a starship who conduct special missions, the majority of these on alien terrain. According to Starfleet regulations, the captain was prohibited from leading any away missions, but through the years more and more captains decided to "overlook" this regulation. In special circumstances, such as a first contact mission, the captain was required to lead the team.

(TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint", "Time's Arrow") Under Starfleet Code Section 12, Paragraph 4 of these same regulations, the commanding officer was prohibited in most cases from joining the away team, with his or her place being on the bridge.
