| - The Galactic Alliance Guard (GAG) was the secret police force of the Galactic Alliance, created in 40 ABY as part of the Alliance government's counter-terrorism policy. Designed for intelligence assessment and special operations, the Guard's members were drawn from the ranks of Coruscant Security Force, Intelligence Service and the Defense Force, specifically for the purposes of monitoring seditious activities—either suspected or confirmed—and neutralizing terrorist threats on Coruscant, the capital world of the Galactic Alliance. The formation of GAG was an indirect result of a growing secessionist movement led by Corellia; Corellian terrorist attacks against Coruscant further convinced high-ranking officials such as Chief of State Cal Omas and Senator G'vli G'Sil that a secret police was necessary for the enforcement of domestic security. Although the Jedi Order opposed GAG's creation, Omas wanted a Jedi officer to lead the new anti-terrorist organization. Hence, he commissioned the Jedi Knight Jacen Solo as a colonel after the latter accepted leadership of the Guard. Under Colonel Solo's command, GAG quickly established itself as a major deterrent against terrorism. The Guard maintained a vigilant watch over the capital, utilizing droid technology—droid brains for monitoring the HoloNet and combat drones for suppressing insurgents—and specially-trained soldiers to enforce law and order on Coruscant. Together with his cousin Ben Skywalker, the son of Grand Master Luke Skywalker, Solo personally led 967 Commando, a unit of elite GAG troopers, on numerous missions to arrest and detain terrorist suspects. In order to emphasize the government's stance against terrorism, Solo wanted GAG to be a visible symbol of the Alliance's policy on terrorists and traitors. Thus, black was adopted as the primary color of the Guard; virtually everything GAG-related—from armored soldiers to the Star Destroyer Anakin Solo—was painted in black. To some, GAG's appearance and methods harkened back to the ways of Darth Sidious's Galactic Empire. Critics often compared GAG troopers to Imperial stormtroopers and Colonel Solo to his deceased grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader. For others, however, the Galactic Alliance Guard was regarded as Coruscant's most effective line of defense against terrorism. Many Coruscanti Humans supported GAG's efforts to rout out terrorists before further attacks could be launched on the capital. After the Galactic Alliance's failure to preempt the insurrection of the Corellian-led Confederation, the galaxy was divided once again by a new civil war. Solo soon came to regard Omas's administration as weak and incapable of ensuring the survival of the Alliance. With the support of Admiral Cha Niathal, Solo and the Galactic Alliance Guard removed Omas from office by force, placing the former Chief of State under house arrest. Niathal and Solo then secured the government and the military as a duumvirate, sharing executive power as Joint Chief of State Number One and Joint Chief of State Number Two respectively. Shortly afterward, Solo fulfilled his secret training as a Sith Lord, hence renaming himself as Darth Caedus, the first active Dark Lord of the Sith since the deaths of Sidious and Vader. Throughout the Second Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Alliance Guard became firmly tethered to Darth Caedus's vision of a New Order, a system inspired in many ways by Sidious's own vision of an authoritarian-ruled police state. As such, GAG objectives came to include the transferring of millions of prisoners into concentration camps; the establishment of police-state control over civilian systems; co-opting direct control of the military; and wresting executive power from the Senate via constitutional amendments. At the height of Caedus's reign, the Dark Lord ruled the Galactic Alliance as Emperor in all but name, and the Guard had effectively replaced the state. After Darth Caedus was killed during the Battle of Uroro Station in 41 ABY, GAG was dismantled by the victorious Jedi Coalition, thus marking the end of the Civil War. The Galactic Alliance ultimately retained its position as the dominant state throughout the galaxy, and the protection of Coruscant was transferred from the defunct Guard to the Galactic Alliance Security (GAS).
