The Carlisle lineup, managed by ex-Rovers manager John Ward, featured goalkeeper Ben Williams, who scored an own goal last time he faced Rovers when playing for Crewe Alexandra. His o.g. gifted Rovers a point in a 1-1 draw at Alexandra Stadium the previous season. Rovers took an early lead in the game, when Rickie Lambert headed in a Craig Disley cross after 15 minutes. The lead was short-lived however with Carlisle equalising through Danny Carlton four minutes later. Carlisle scored their second on the stroke of half time, Marc Bridge-Wilkinson giving them a 2-1 lead at the break. Carlton scored his second of the game in the 80th minute before Andy Williams scored an injury time consolation goal, sealing a 3-2 victory for the Cumbrians.
