The J-97 Mosquito is a handheld particle weapon in the shape of a derringer. It was once used to test out how small energy-based firearms could be scaled down hence its name. A small power cell allows the device to fire off a bolt of highly charged particles with tremendous destructive potential. Whatever the bolt hits will receive roughly the same amount of damage as two shots from a Siege Tank. This is usually enough to take down any armored infantry unit.

Unfortunately, the power requirements of that one shot burns out the entire weapon after one use (Deus Ex: PS20). Another side-effect is that the recoil is enough to push back the user a few feet if not properly braced (MIB: Noisy Cricket). This has left it largely unpopular with military and civilian use, which may have been the cause of the company going bankrupt and every other project being bought up or destroyed. * High damage to targets * Effective at short to medium ranges * Effective against all armor types * One shot only before becoming useless * No melee damage * Recoil pushes user back ~6-8 feet if not braced
