Until Samus has been authorized to use the Wave Beam, the Pods are the only way she can engage Grahams safely. The Wave Beam allows her to pierce their armor without having to specifically target the Laser Launch Pod. The Ice Beam can freeze over the Pods entirely, preventing the Grahams from firing at Samus.
