He started out with the Seattle Americans in 1957-58 and then played for the Seattle Totems until 1961. In that year he was traded by the Detroit Red Wings (who owned his NHL rights) to the New York Rangers for Bill Gadsby. That led him to the Rangers' farm team, the Vancouver Canucks. Hunt played for the Canucks until 1967 when another NHL deal affected him. This time the new Pittsburgh Penguins chose him in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft from the Rangers. Hunt ended up on the Penguins' farm team the Baltimore Clippers for the 1967-68 season.
