The University is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and one of five Marymount institutions of higher education. LMU was created in 1973 by the merger of Marymount College and Loyola University in Los Angeles. Parent school to Loyola Law School located in downtown Los Angeles. Loyola Marymount has often been ranked as having one of the most beautiful college campuses in America.

LMU was created in 1973 by the merger of Marymount College and Loyola University in Los Angeles. Parent school to Loyola Law School located in downtown Los Angeles. Loyola Marymount has often been ranked as having one of the most beautiful college campuses in America. The Loyola Marymount Lions are the athletic teams that represent Loyola Marymount University, a Jesuit institution in Los Angeles. The school competes in NCAA Division I, with its primary affiliation in the West Coast Conference, an organization consisting totally of religiously-affiliated schools. Although its origin is somewhat clouded, the Lion mascot, known as Iggy the Lion after St. Ignatius of Loyola, S.J., has been synonymous with Loyola Marymount University for more than 70 years. There home arena is Gersten Pavilion.
