The Newly Industrialized Economies, or NIEs, is a title occasionally used in the Appleseed manga to describe a series of independent small countries in Southern Asia that are gradually emerging from poverty and embracing industrial revolution. In the Appleseed ID graphical encyclopedia, author Shirow Masamune points out, however, that these small states are still polarized in that they comprise evenly of both "orderly cities and sprawling slums."
