* if religion, aka theology, is the study of God and/or gods, and God/gods are conscious beings, then it follows to call them persons or people, even if they're not human. Sentient space creatures (extraterrestrial aliens) would also fall under this category, as would dolphins & whales if they are truly conscious. If on the other hand, there is no such thing as God or gods which objectively exist, then the study of such would still be a social science, since then what would be studied are the ideas and the histories of such ideas in individual human minds & societies ("collective minds", or "shared realities").
