The Genesis is Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. In 1990, the console was released as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, by Ozisoft in Australasia, and by Tec Toy in Brazil. • Image:GenesisLogo.gif The Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis is a video game console released by Sega in Japan in 1988, North America in 1989, and the PAL region in 1990. It debuted under the name Sega Genesis in North America, as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive was the first 16-bit console to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America. It was the direct competitor of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, although the Sega Genesis was released two years earlier.
  • The Sega Genesis was the second SEGA console released. It first launched in Japan on October 29, 1988, followed by in North America on August 14, 1989. It finally launched in the PAL region on November 30, 1990 with the help of Virgin Mastertronic (who were later bought in 1991 and turned into SEGA of Europe). The Brazillian launch was handled by Tec toy. SEGA was determined to seize a piece of the gaming console pie from Nintendo, and they soon released a cutting edge console superior to the NES in every way. With the slogan, Genesis does what Nintendon't, Sega aggresively attacked Nintendo in a variety of marketing campaigns, and soon gained the upper hand, overthrowing the NES. It was bundled with Altered Beast at launch.
  • After failing to make a real dent against the NES, Sega decided just to top them. If Nintendo was dragging their feet to a 16-bit system (the arcade standard at the time), then Sega would beat them to the punch with a console based on its System 16 arcade board. Nintendo eventually had its own entry in the 16-bit era in the form of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The SNES and Genesis had a long and fierce console war that is probably the best-remembered of them all. Not to be confused with the band Genesis, the Web Game Ge Ne Sis, the Genesis Device... or the book in The Bible.
  • The Mega Drive was designed by Firippu Collins and Petoro Gabriel, intended to improve on the 8-bit graphics of the Coleco Adam and the Apple I Eve with 16-bit BLAST PROCESSING. The Mega Drive did poorly in its native Japan, but was a smash hit in the United States after a subtle name change to "Genesis". The only thing Americans love more than a video game console named after a book of the bible is a car named after a tribe of Indians.
  • The Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive, as it was known in other territories) was a 16-bit home video game console. It had a large library of games and many exclusive franchises. It's main competitors were Nintendo's 8-bit NES and later the 16-bit SNES. Later in the console's life it gained two add-ons - the Sega CD which allowed the console to play CD games and the Sega 32x which had a library of 32-bit games. The console came in three models, as well as a handheld version called the Sega Nomad. The Nerd owns all of them.
