| - Vespasian (d. 1943) was a Confederate Negro. During the Great War, many of the white workers at Sloss Steel Foundry were sent to the front. In desperation, the company hired Vespasian and other blacks to replace them. Vespasian worked alongside Jefferson Pinkard. Vespasian impressed Pinkard with his skill and hard work. Briefly, Pinkard began reconsidering his ingrained belief in the inferiority of blacks. However, the course of Pinkard's life during and after the Great War left him embittered toward blacks. He became a member of the Freedom Party, and eventually an architect of the Population Reduction. In 1943, in a quirk of fate, Vespasian was shipped to Camp Humble, the last camp Pinkard oversaw. Vespasian was allowed to speak to Pinkard, who falsely assured Vespasian that everything would be fine. In truth, Vespasian was taken to the showers and gassed.
