As the rulers of that region, the couple set about bringing the benefits of Kree rule to mankind; building a strong empire and military presence that provided stability to the region. Mar-Vell's wife Phyla-Vell wanted to bear his children but he was to caught up in his work try to restore peace to the human world. Phyla-Vell then met Mar-Vell's friend Ran, who was a military ally. Phyla-Vell and Ran fell in love with each other. The highest priest Mo witnessed the affair and told Mar-Vell about it. Mar-Vell didn't believe him. However, after seeing Phyla-Vell and Ran kissing, he wished them dead. Mo inferred this impulsive comment as an indirect order, which he set about to carry out. After finding Phyla-Vell and Ran dead, Mar-Vell felt it was his fault and drunk the poisoned wine, and died holding hands with his wife. Centuries later, he was seemingly reincarnated as a human named Walter Lawson, otherwise known as Captain Marvel.
