- In the short story "A Little Sacrifice" in Sword of Destiny, the residents of the underwater city of Ys are not called "vodyanoi" but simply "People of the sea" ("Morski lud"), but it seems quite clear that the creatures in the game were based on this story.
- In Slavic folklore, the Vodyanoi (also spelled Vodonoi, Wódjanoj, Vodyanoy) were male water spirits who could change form and were said to live in whirlpools or underwater palaces made from materials salvaged from sunken ships. The most common form they took was an old man with a green beard and covered in muck. Many drownings were attributed to Vodyanoi. The bodies would not be retrieved out of fear it would anger the Vodyanoi by taking his "spoils" from him. E' probabile che le creature del videogioco siano le stesse descritte nel racconto. Fonti scritte confermano che il popolo dei pesci è molto religioso e tiene in grande considerazione i loro sacerdoti. Sfortunatamente durante le loro scorribande sulla terraferma, i sacerdoti vanno in aiuto delle truppe di guerrieri con i loro incantesimi religiosi. In questo caso, un povero e onesto witcher dovrà metterci un po' più impegno del solito. Dans la nouvelle « Une once d'abnégation », dans le recueil L'Épée de la Providence, les hommes-poissons ne portent pas le nom de « Vodyanoi », mais il semble assez clair que les Vodyanois du jeu sont basés sur les créatures que Geralt rencontre au cours de cette histoire. L'océan est grand, Agloval. Personne ne sait encore ce que l'horizon dissimule, si tant est qu'il dissimule quelque chose. L'océan est plus grand que la plus grande des forêts primitives au fond de laquelle vous avez chassé des elfes. Il est plus difficile d'accès que n'importe quelle montagne ou vallée oû vous avez massacré les hommes-marmottes. Au fond de l'océan vit une race armée de cuirasses, connaissant les secrets du façonnage des métaux. Fais attention, Agloval. Si des archers commencent à accompagner les pêcheurs, une guerre commencera contre un ennemi que tu ne connais pas. Ce que tu comptes réaliser peut devenir un nid de frelons. Je te conseille donc de laisser la mer, car la mer n'est pas pour vous. L'ouvrage Description des Vodyanoi, les hommes-poissons permet à Geralt d'acquérir toutes les informations nécessaires sur les Vodyanoi.

Aparece como um velho nu com uma barba esverdeada e cabelo comprido, o corpo coberto de algas e limo, geralmente com escamas negras de peixe. Tem patas membranosas no lugar de mãos, cauda de peixe e olhos que queimam como carvões em brasa. Às vezes se parece com um grande peixe, em outras ocasiões com uma enorme rã, do tamanho de uma foca e de face humana. Geralmente monta em um tronco semi-afundado, chapinhando de forma ruidosa. Freqüentemente é apelidado "vovô" ou antepassado pelos locais. Diz-se que os afogamentos são provocados pelos vodyanoi (ou pelas rusalkas). Pode arrastar pessoas para sua morada subaquática, decorada com tesouros de navios afundados, para que o sirvam como escravos, dando-lhes a capacidade de respirar n'água.
