| - Robert Steven Caron was selected to create a new English translation of Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's "Asterix" series for sale in the United States. Caron's translations were the second attempt to introduce "Asterix" to the American market, the first being the short-lived publication of some of the stories as a syndicated newspaper comic strip. Caron translated five books, Asterix and the Great Crossing, Asterix the Legionary, Asterix at the Olympic Games , Asterix in Britain and Asterix and Cleopatra. For copyright reasons, he was not permitted to use most of the names that had featured in the British English translations by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. The "Asterix" books failed to sell very well in the United States and, for that reason, no further translations were comissioned from Caron. However, the American publishers issued the remaining books in the series, using Bell and Hockridge's translations. This created some confusion among the few American "Asterix" fans because characters had different names within what was supposed to be the same series. For example, in the five books translated by Caron, the druid is called Magigamix but he is Getafix in the rest of the series.
