The Wicked Witch of the West is the antagonist created by author L. Frank Baum from his 1900 Oz novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and most notably in the 1939 MGM film, The Wizard of Oz, portrayed by late actress Margaret Hamilton. Elphaba is also the main character of the very successful Broadway Musical of the same name. Rather book or stage adaptation the story itself is a much more mature and slightly darker version of the first American Fairy-tale; The Wizard of Oz which combines many key elements from the iconic 1939 movie by MGM and the original 1900 book titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by children's author L. Frank Baum The story of Wicked is not seen through the eyes of the original Oz protagonist--Kansas farm girl known as Dorothy Gale. However, even though Dorothy does not hold center stage, she still plays a part at crucial times but only because the story could never exist without her. Dorothy is neither the hero nor villain in the story but a mere outsider thrown into a world she knows nothing about. Instead, everything solely revolves around the social outcast and tortured soul named Elphaba, aka "Elphie". The plot follows her life journey, focusing on her thoughts, trials, tribulations, her meaningful relationships and eventual decent into Wickedness and how it changed the land of Oz forever. Despite being the protagonist to the reader of the novel or viewer of the play, Elphaba eventually becomes viewed as the antagonist who rebels against the repression in Oz. Her strength to stand up for what she believes in leads to her being viewed by many Ozians as "Wicked," thus, ultimately leading to her tragic demise. Despite her sad fate, and tarnished reputation due to the matter of Dorothy, Elphaba becomes known by many others as an underground legend and iconic activist for Animal rights long after she melted. The facts that she really used "her magic" to allow Nessarose, her invalid sister to be able to walk and get out of her wheelchair so she could be like others for the first time and dance and attract a man shows her true character. The fact that Fiyero was at first a very superficial man only attracted to the surface beauty and popularity and rich family that Galinda came from, he showed his true character when he fell in love with the true inner beauty of Elphaba's soul and had the courage to break the marriage engagement that Glinda was arranging. Elphaba again shows her true soul when she helps Fiyero escape the men that were going to kill him by changing him into the Scarecrow so he is passed over in the field. She also gave away the Gremmiere, the magic spell book to Glinda and told her not to worry about clearning her name...she just wants to enjoy a quiet life with the Scarecrow that has proven he had brains, heart, and courage. So it will take character growth and another movie for Glinda to grow enough from the rejection of Fiyero actually chosing Elphaba over her. Will she do the right thing and allow her two friends to have a happy, "normal" life or will she become a vendictive "evil" and beautiful witch that people perceive as Good, ignoring the Tin Man that Nessarose loved before he rejected her in persuit of Glinda, who didn't love him? Such a twisted love story when we are attracted by temporal beauty and financial wealth. Will there ever be a land where all people can be true and loving and trusted to be for real? Author Gregory Maguire payed homage to Baum and formulated Elphaba's unique name out of L. Frank Baum's name, taking the phonetic pronunciation of his initials: hence, L.F.B became El-pha-ba. Unlike the one eyed Wicked Witch in Baum's original Oz book from 1900, Elphaba's appearence in Wicked is based upon Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of the Wicked Witch from the 1939 film.

Elphaba meets care-free, fun-loving, and initially annoying Fiyero, who almost runs her over with his 'car', which is more like a bike, being driven by a friend of his. Elphaba quickly dislikes him, and wants nothing to do with Fiyero aside from waking him up, and yelling at him. But Elphaba soon likes Fiyero, after Galinda lets the two meet properly. The next day, Elphaba sees Fiyero, and talks to him. Her teacher, an animal named Dr. Dillamond, is kicked out of his job, and the new teacher tries to take a lion bun's power to speak. Elphaba saves the lion cub, and befriends Fiyero, and later falls in love with him. She then goes to meet the Wizard, and lets Galinda, who has changed her name to Glinda in an attempt to have Fiyero notice her again, come. But she finds out that the Wizard is evil, and taking the animals' power to speak. Elphaba is tricked by the Wizard to create flying monkeys which he plans to use as spies. She then takes his spell book, which is written in a way almost no one can read even after ages of trying, yet Elphaba could read at first sight, and runs. As vengeance, the Wizard spreads the rumor that she's 'Wicked' and turns the public against her. When she learns of Fiyero's supposed death, she finally embraces her reputation of a villain. However, when she realizes that Fiyero has in fact survived, Elphaba acknowledges the mistakes she has made in her life, and decides to get a fresh start outside of Oz. She uses a spell to give herself wings, runs away, and fights the Wizard. Near the end of the play, Elphaba says a tearful goodbye to Glinda, both saying that the other were the only true friend they ever had, and is melted. Yet at the very end of the play she comes out of a trap door, and runs away from Oz with Fiyero, who has now been turned into a scarecrow.
