| - This list shows you quest / mob difficulty colors, depending on your own level.
* Gray mobs give no XP and full reputation
* Gray players give no Honor points
* Gray quests give reduced XP, but full reputation. See Quest Basics. A quest's or mob's difficulty color is sometimes referred to as its "con". I.e., a gray-con mob or something that cons red. This is a holdover from MUDs/MUSHs/MUCKs where the standard command to determine difficulty was /con or /consider. Everquest I had/has a system where you had to type this command. World of Warcraft has simplified the process by displaying the appropriate color on a hostile mob's portrait's level number when you target it. Exceptions to the following are elites.
* Grey mobs are well below you. You should have little difficulty dispatching them regardless of class unless you are AFK during the whole fight or near death when you pick the fight up.
* Green mobs are somewhat below you, and while one to three of them should pose little challenge to you (depending on your class), beware of large groups of them.
* Yellow mobs are always within two levels of your character level. Make sure to give them your full attention and you should be able to kill them.
* Orange mobs are always 3 and 4 levels above you. Depending on your class, they are either to be avoided, or to be given your all to defeat.
* Red mobs are always 5 through 9 levels above you. You should always avoid these if you can help it, or be well prepared if you can't or are summoning it for a quest. Even then, most classes should not try it.
* Skull mobs are always 10 or more levels above you. Regardless of class, never, ever engage these mobs alone. See also: Formulas:Mob XP#Con_Colors
