Brutal death metal is a subgenre of death metal music. It is characterized by rhythm-centric composition; guitars featuring fast tremolo picking, heavy palm muting for a percussive effect; and highly technical drum work, with frequent employment of blast beats, syncopation, and varied timing. Although both subgenres share many of the same musical qualities, brutal death metal, can be distinguished from technical death metal, by comparing the prominence of these qualities. A listener would experience a more percussive, and less melodic sound, listening to an album associated brutal death metal, than they would, an album considered to belong, more strongly, to the technical death metal subgenre.
