  • Doctor Avril Smythe was an archaeologist who discovered the Al Amir jewel amongst the artifacts of a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt. The jewel and other treasures were taken for an exhibition at the Museum of Natural History in New York City where Al Amir was to be unveiled. Doctor Smythe was among the attendees along with dignitaries such as Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and the British ambassador representing Egypt on the opening day. When the doors parted at 2:00pm, however, the crowd was greeted by the sight of a murdered guard and an empty case indicating that the jewel had been stolen.
