In the end, the self-styled Master meets Death and challenges Him to a duel, but winds up in a conversation in which Death allows the wizard to speak to his deceased mother and brother, as well as an imaginary son who'd never been born. Death then allows the Master to choose between immortality, one of his loved ones, or a duel, but the wizard elected to leave with none of those things.
