The Quaternary Period is the geologic time period from the end of the Pliocene Epoch roughly 1.806 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary includes 2 geologic subdivisions -- the Pleistocene and the Holocene Epochs. In a recent revision of the international classification of geological time periods, the Quaternary was subsumed into the Neogene. The move has met with some resistance from geologists.

- The Quaternary is a period that began 2.588 million years ago, and is the current period, part of the Neogene
- The Quaternary is a period in Earth's history that makes up the third part of the Cenozoic era. The present day is in the Quaternary.
- The Quaternary Period is the geologic time period after the Neogene Period, spanning 1.805 +/- 0.005 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary includes two geologic epochs: the Pleistocene and the Holocene Epoch.

- The Quaternary Period is the geologic time period after the Neogene Period, spanning 1.805 +/- 0.005 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary includes two geologic epochs: the Pleistocene and the Holocene Epoch. There is an ongoing debate of the status of Quaternary — a recent proposal from International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) was to make Quaternary a subperiod under Neogene, but that was retracted after criticism from International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA), so instead ICS and INQUA agreed to erect Quaternary as an Era, above Neogene, and to place the base for Quaternary at 2.588 ± 3.005, the base for Gelasian Stage. However IUGS decided that Quaternary could not start within the Pliocene Epoch thereby splitting it in two, so the decision is still awaiting settlement.
- The Quaternary is a period in Earth's history that makes up the third part of the Cenozoic era. The present day is in the Quaternary.
