Lynet (also Lynette) is a proud noble woman who comes to the Round Table seeking aid for her sister Lyonor who is besieged by the Red Knight. She is sent Sir Gareth to help her, but knows him only as the kitchen boy Beaumains and despises him. She tries to send him away but he refuses, and on the way defeats several recreant knights. Lynet learns to respect Gareth, and he defeats the Red Knight and frees her sister, whom he marries. Lynet falls in love and marries Gaheris, Gareth's brother. In Idylls of the King Gareth marries Lynet.
