He was a companion to Covetous Shen in their search for the mystical crucible. However, for whatever reason Gavin knocked Shen out with a bottle, locking him in a barrel afterwards, and took the crucible for himself. He did not notice, however, that the device has been cursed, and the Nephalem was forced to kill Gavin, as the latter has lost his sanity. In combat, he has Fast and Plagued affixes, and is assisted by multiple foes in the area. After his death, Shen says that now he can use the purified crucible to combine gems.
