The Fifth Master was the fifth (on-screen) incarnation of the renegade Time Lord known as the Master. During the Last Great Time War, he was revived by the Time Lords, who believed that he would be the perfect soldier to fight in the war, due to his savagery. He crossed paths with his old enemy, the Doctor (though the Doctor was unaware that he was the Master) and participated in many engagements in the Time War. He defended a Time Lord-controlled deep space station that was building a super-weapon known as the Cruciform. However, in a surprise attack by the Dalek Emperor's personal fleet, the station was overrun and the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. Terrified at what the Daleks could do with the Cruciform, the Master abandoned the battle, but not before a Dalek spaceship se

However, in a surprise attack by the Dalek Emperor's personal fleet, the station was overrun and the Dalek Emperor took control of the Cruciform. Terrified at what the Daleks could do with the Cruciform, the Master abandoned the battle, but not before a Dalek spaceship severely damaged his TARDIS. Resolving to run as far away from the Time War as possible, the Master used the chameleon arch of his TARDIS to turn himself into a human. He became a baby known as Elias Yana, left abandoned on the coast of the Silver Devastation. Moments after assigning the Master a new life, his TARDIS was destroyed, though the Time Lords would later recover it's remains, and concluded that the Master had been killed during the siege on the Cruciform.
