He painted a few of his soldiers red, which made the Banath people think that those soldiers were the leaders of Villiam's army, since they always painted their own leaders red. The Banath people then hunted Villiam's painted soldiers, while Villiam's archers shot their leaders. This is told in The Song of a Hundred Days.
