| - The selka is one of the few creatures of distinction native to Mergansar and the Sarian people. It is canine-like animal, with a long, slender body and a quiet, almost regal demeanor. An elongated snout belies a heightened sense of smell, while trim ears hear very well. The general body frame is evolved for speed and nimbleness. Because it is subject to the same pianetic minerals in its diet as Sarians are, a selka has a speckled coat that also has a shimmering look to it, as well as metallic-sheen eyes.

Because it is subject to the same pianetic minerals in its diet as Sarians are, a selka has a speckled coat that also has a shimmering look to it, as well as metallic-sheen eyes. Selkas were initially domesticated to be faithful, quiet companions to all manner of Sarians. Many Janhovi kept them in their homesteads to keep rodents at bay, as well as act as guardians. Later, they were trained as racers. After off-world immigrants became integrated into the new Caspian society, Selkas were adopted as police and security supplements. Because Mergansar and Caspar are inundated with so much electromagnetic interference, and shielded or insulated electronics had yet to be developed, Caspians found selkas to be quite adept at detection and tracking. Several hundred were bred as "warhounds", and have served in the Provincial Army alongside Theran hurnots.
