Ils considèrent également qu'un élu du maître viendra combattre les ténèbres. Selon Mélisandre, il s'agissait de Stannis Baratheon puis de Jon Snow tandis que selon Kinvara, il s'agit de Daenerys Targaryen. Ceux qui pratiquent cette religion semblent être dotés de pouvoirs extraordinaires que beaucoup qualifient de forces démoniaques dont Varys. Parmi cette magie noire, on peut notamment résister au poison (Mélisandre but la coupe empoisonnée de Cressen sans mourir), donner vie à une ombre afin de tuer quelqu'un (Assassinat de Renly Baratheon), ramener un mort à la vie (Beric Dondarrion, Jon Snow), (tuer quelqu'un à l'aide de sangsues contenant du sang royal (Meurtres respectifs de Robb Stark, Joffrey Baratheon et Balon Greyjoy) ou encore changer d'apparence (Mélisandre est en fait une très vielle femme avec un corps en permanence jeune).
