- A mechanical is a type of construct that is at least partially technological. These constructs are also known as "robots", though, the term also applies to characters piloting suits of steam armor. (MG 192) Most Mechanicals are found in Gnomeregan, and most can be controlled using the Gnomish Universal Remote. Mechanical constructs may be modified and affected like any other technological device. (MG 192)
- Mechanical was one of the Ages written and visited by Atrus from Myst Island.
- Mechanical units are composed of mechanical components and possibly a biological component. Most mechanical units are vehicles with a terran driver.
- The Mechanical skill allows a Sim to repair broken appliances, electronics, sinks, tubs, toilets, and showers at a faster speed which may eliminate the need for a repairman. Having some degree of Mechanical skill also reduces the risk of a Sim being electrocuted when changing light bulbs, however, having the maximum skill level (10/10) does not eliminate the risk of getting electrocuted. Mechanical skill is also important in the promotion of the Sim's career, including (but not limited to), business, military, science, and law enforcement. In Makin' Magic, a Sim's Mechanical skill affects the number of charges charms they make will have, and how many MagiCoins they'll get for performing on the wooden stage in Magic Town.
- Mechanical stands for "mechanical aptitude" and represents how well a character can pilot vehicles and starships and operate the various systems on board. It also reflects how well the character handles live mounts, like banthas and tauntauns. A character with a high Mechanical attribute is going to take naturally to driving landspeeders, flying cloud cars and piloting X-wings and ships like the Millennium Falcon. A character with a low Mechanical attribute has a lot of minor accidents.

Most Mechanical skills are used to drive vehicles or pilot starships. Most of the time, characters should be able to negotiate clear terrain (Very Easy or Easy) without too much trouble. It's when a driver goes too fast, tries risky maneuvers or gets involved in a chase that things get tricky. Movement, chase and vehicle combat rules are explained in the chapter on "Movement and Chases." Movement and chases with starships is explained in the chapter on "Space Travel and Combat."
To increase a Sim's Mechanical skill, have them read mechanical books from the bookshelves. In Livin' Large, using the KraftMatic Woodworking Table to make gnomes will increase a Sim's Mechanical skill. Higher Mechanical skill lets a Sim make gnomes faster, and increases the price each gnome can be sold for. In Makin' Magic, a similar table, the Kraft-a-Gargoyle table is introduced, which also increases the Mechanical skill. In Makin' Magic, Sims can also increase Mechanical skill by using the Prick-Me-Not Spinning Wheel.
