Augustine Washington (1694-1743) was the father of George Washington, the first President of the United States. The Washingtons were visited by Sesame Street News' roving reporter Kermit the Frog in a season nine segment of Sesame Street. There, Augustine Washington (referred to by Kermit as "George Washington's father" and by his son as "Pop") witnessed his son cutting down one of the 1,776 cherry trees in his orchard with his little hatchet. Despite being frustrated about this (wishing he'd given his son that wagon instead), the senior Washington was proud of the way his son told the truth. He even predicts that one day his son will be something special, like the Father of His Country ("I bet he will," says Kermit).
