| - The items predominantly date to the period of classical Japan and the Imperial era of China from the 6th century. Currently there are 223 items or sets of items listed in this category. Many of them originated in China and were imported to Japan in ancient times. The list contains written materials of various type such as sutra transcriptions, poetry, historical and specialist books. The documents are housed in temples, museums, libraries or archives, shrines, universities and in private collections. Predominantly, the documents in this list were made with a writing brush on paper and in many cases present important examples of calligraphy. The list is limited to New National Treasures, those that have been designated since June 9, 1951 after the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties came into force.
