An armor bonus is a type of modifier available for a creature's armor class, representing an enchantment on the outfit worn by a creature (but technically not requiring an outfit to actually be worn). This bonus is typically obtained as an item property on armor. The other standard sources of this bonus are bracers and the spells magic vestment (which creates the item property), mage armor, and epic mage armor. Multiple armor bonuses do not stack.

  • The bonus to defenses provided by wearing armor. Mundane armor and low level magic armor give armor bonuses boosting a character's armor class. Higher level armor provide better inherent armor bonus to armor class, in addition to the bonus to AC provided by the armor's enhancement bonus. Some types of high level armor also provide bonuses to other defenses, or they provide Resistance, at the expense of granting a lesser bonus to AC.
  • An armor bonus (or spiritual armor according to the manuals) is a powerup that appears as a bronze-gray helmet with a green glow emanating from within. Picking one up increases the player's armor percentage by one percent up to a maximum of 200 percent (or, in versions of Doom prior to 1.2, a much larger value). This item is counted in the items percentage displayed at the end of each level.
  • Armor bonus is a bonus to Armor Class granted by armor or by a spell or magical effect that mimics armor. Armor bonuses stack with all other bonuses to Armor Class (even with natural armor bonuses) except other armor bonuses. Magic armor typically grants an enhancement bonus to the armor's armor bonus, which has the effect of increasing the armor's overall bonus. An armor bonus granted by a spell or magic item typically takes the form of an invisible, tangible field of force around the recipient.

An armor bonus granted by a spell or magic item typically takes the form of an invisible, tangible field of force around the recipient. An armor bonus doesn't apply against touch attacks, except for armor bonuses granted by force effects (such as the mage armor spell) which apply against incorporeal touch attacks, such as that of a shadow.

Picking one up increases the player's armor percentage by one percent up to a maximum of 200 percent (or, in versions of Doom prior to 1.2, a much larger value). Green armor and blue megaarmor provide different levels of protection (one third and one half of damage, respectively, are absorbed per hit); armor bonuses do not change the type of protection currently in effect. If a player that has no armor picks up one or more armor bonuses, they grant one third protection, as the standard armor. This item is counted in the items percentage displayed at the end of each level.
