He is presumably one of Gargamel's ancestors who lived in Holland about a few hundred years prior to the present time (ie. the Smurfs' own time), and like Gargamel himself is an evil wizard. The target of his hatred is the winged cherub Cupid, and sought to destroy him and his mission to spread love around the world, but the time-lost Smurfs happened to interfere with one of his plans to do so. While Brainy, Hefty, and Clumsy were filling in for Cupid during a time when his wings needed healing, Brainy was captured by Van Garg and was changed into a wicked bat-winged Smurf whose mission was to spread hatred. Hefty who saw Brainy being changed by Van Garg flew to the Smurf camp to warn Cupid and Papa Smurf, only for Brainy to reach the camp first and raise up an army of bat-winged hate-spreaders, which included Cupid and Papa Smurf. Van Garg saw Hefty being cornered by Brainy's army and captured him, but Hefty had fired a love arrow into a passing storm cloud overhead, changing it into a cloud that rained love upon all who were under the cloud, including Van Garg and his cat. With his heart changed, Van Garg decided to devote his life to doing good and noble deeds instead.
