The series features a cast of martial artists of various combat styles, nationalities and backgrounds, who take part in a worldwide tournament called the "Dead or Alive World Combat Championship", held every year by the Dead or Alive Tournament Executive Committee, whose corrupt Head of the Development Victor Donovan secretly uses as a way to find specimens for the creation of "the ultimate fighter" - a humanoid bio-weapon - through genetic experiments.
