She is Popeye's eternal sweetheart and the two have stuck through thick and thin to face many challenges and adventures together. Since her debut, Olive is one of the most recognizable female cartoon characters in the world and is often seen as a poster girl for the "damsel-in-distress" theme. Olive Oyl is a character from the comic strip Thimble Theater, by Elzie Crisler, which revolved around the members of the Oyl-family. After ten years, Popeye was introduced into the strip and eventually the strip came to revolve around him, as did the animated cartoons that followed. Olive Oyl is his girlfriend, but she also enjoys the attention of Bluto. When Bluto goes as far as trying to kidnap her, though, she cries to Popeye for help. Olive Oyl is the girlfriend of Harold Hamgravy, the original protagonist of the Thimble Theater comic strip. She is also the sister of recurring character Castor Oyl. According to the Comics Kingdom author, “Their adventures usually concentrate on acquiring undeserved status or wealth, and often end in futile embarrassment and defeat.” Olive Oyl seems to have been presented as something of a homebody, although some strips portray her as a dancer, a cook and even a surgeon. She is sometimes also portrayed as a “damsel in distress” from antagonist Willie Wormwood. The series has a common theme. Both Popeye and Bluto try to impress Olive with feats of strength, with Popeye always winning. Bluto doesn't take losing easily and beats up Popeye and kidnaps Olive Oyl. Popeye wakes up and eats spinach which renews him and gives him the extra boost to beat Bluto. In rare occurences, Olive ends up having to save Popeye from a muscular woman by eating spinach. In one instance, Olive defeats Bluto with one punch without spinach. Olive Oyl also appeared in the 1980 live-action Popeye film where she is played by Shelley Duvall.
