The film was originally produced as a Direct-to-video film, but was released theatrically first, similar to the Peter Pan sequel, Return to Never Land. It is the third animated Disney sequel to have a theatrical release rather than going direct-to-video after The Rescuers Down Under in 1990 and Return to Neverland in 2002. The film is a continuation of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and is not based on The Second Jungle Book. However, they do have several characters in common. When released, it was criticized mainly for the quality of its animation and the similarity of its plotline to the original film.

By no means an awful movie, but definitely a 100% completely pointless one. There is no reason to continue this story, there is no reason to see these characters again. The first one ended on a perfect note. Mowgli goes where he’s supposed to go, and the animals go where they’re supposed to go. So, if you’re gonna do a sequel to this, you should make it really interesting. Hell, even the original book had a sequel, and it’s very, very interesting -- in fact, it’s downright depressing! But seeing how the first film barely followed
