The Disabled Surfers Association began in Sydney, Australia in 1986. It was originally devised to help surfers who had suffered an illness or accident make their way back into the water. After a motorcycle accident, Gary Blashcke, the founder, was told he would never surf again. Not being able to fathom this idea, the concept of the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) arose. The DSA caters for all disabled people wishing to have a go at surfing in a safe, happy environment. The organisation is self-funded and relies on volunteers and donations from the community. Currently the organisation has 13 regional branches with the latest branch opening in New Zealand.
