A Class L star is a type of brown dwarf star. They are too small and cool for full hydrogen fusion to take place, and appear to be a dim red with their spectrum peaking in the infrared. Class L brown dwarves often begin their life with emissions in the Class M spectrum with a temperature of over 2000 K but cool off and become dimmer over time.
