Bhubaneshwar, literally meaning the Lord of the Universe, has virtually remained synonymous with the characters associated with its name, a city of many temples and the seat of the mighty Kalinga Empire of antiquity - more than 2,000 years old. Presently too, the city is the capital of the Indian state of Orissa. The modern city was the result of a planned effort under the direction of Otto H. Koenigsberger, a German town planner.
