Hurricane Bret was the earliest Atlantic major hurricane and first off-season major hurricane ever recorded. The second named storm, first hurricane and major hurricane of the record-breaking 2041 Atlantic hurricane season, Bret developed from an upper-level low that had stalled over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico in late May. This eventually moved southwards into the Bay of Campeche, stalled and achieved tropical characteristics by May 29. Located over unusually favourable conditions for the time of the year, Bret took advantage of this and rapidly intensified to a major hurricane by May 31. The hurricane made landfall in Mexico at peak strength and rapidly weakened soon afterwards on June 3.

  • Hurricane Bret was the earliest Atlantic major hurricane and first off-season major hurricane ever recorded. The second named storm, first hurricane and major hurricane of the record-breaking 2041 Atlantic hurricane season, Bret developed from an upper-level low that had stalled over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico in late May. Located over unusually favourable conditions for the time of the year, Bret took advantage of this and rapidly intensified to a major hurricane by May 31. The hurricane made landfall in Mexico at peak strength and rapidly weakened soon afterwards on June 3. Bret dropped heavy rains on the affected areas, particularly in Veracruz, which triggered multiple flash floods across the regions. The hurricane also brought very strong winds, most of which were reported in the area where Bret made landfall. The storm was responsible for at least 40 deaths in the areas, as well as making $400 million (USD) in damages.
